Tribute to Andrew Lumsden
(1941 – 2023)
A Pioneer of LGBTQ+ Liberation in the United Kingdom
Andrew Lumsden was one of the boldest and most enduring voices in the UK’s journey toward equality. As a prominent activist within the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) from 1970, he helped ignite a movement that demanded freedom, dignity, and visibility for queer lives.
He attended and played an important role in organising London’s very first Pride march in 1972 — an act of courage that paved the way for today’s celebrations of love and equality. Fifty years later, in 2022, Andrew helped lead the organising of the Radical Roots/Reclaim Pride march through London, commemorating the 50th anniversary of that historic first Pride.
In 1971, Andrew co-founded Gay News, the UK’s first national paper dedicated to LGBTQ+ stories, ensuring queer voices were heard at a time when silence and stigma prevailed.

Acts of Courage and Defiance
From the Chepstow pub sit-in, where he and others protested against discrimination toward drag queens, to his lifelong advocacy through writing, speaking, and guiding Queer Tours of London, Andrew embodied resistance with wit, creativity, and compassion.
He was not just an activist of his time, but a guardian of queer history — ensuring future generations could learn from the struggles and triumphs of the past.

His Legacy Lives On
Andrew Lumsden’s impact continues to ripple through our community. He inspired countless activists and dreamers, proving that change is possible when we stand together.
At The Rainbow Tree, we are especially grateful to the Andrew Lumsden’s Grand Camp Maisie Fund which supported us in shaping our community group. This very website is a proud outcome of that support — a living reminder of his generosity, vision, and belief in collective power.

Our Thanks
Andrew’s life reminds us that courage, solidarity, and joy are at the heart of queer liberation. We honour his memory not just with words, but by carrying his spirit forward — in our work, our celebrations, and our fight for justice.
Rest in Power, Andrew Lumsden. Your legacy lights our path.
